Before you join the hangout:
In order to minimize noise and echoing effects on the hangout and the youtube video, please follow 'netiquette':
To optimize the image and sound quality on the hangout:
This is recommended, but not necessary if you have a fast computer and a good high speed connection.
Joining the hangout:
I will post the link to join the hangout a few minutes before the session starts. You will also receive an invitation on your google+ page that you can click. For technical reasons, the hangout link can only be posted in the minutes leading up to the start of the session. You will find it 'live' then.
When you click the link to join the hangout, you will get a window that asks you to agree to the terms and conditions by clicking the box/button. You can then click the green button to join the hangout. Please know that the hangout will not be broadcast publically, and nobody except those who are in the group program can watch the video of it afterwards. Google does not distinguish between public and private hangouts on air. So when you agree to the terms and conditions before joining, it may look as if this is a public hangout, but IT ISN'T. You are assured of total confidentiality!
1 Download the Google hangout app and Google Chrome browser:
In order to be able to join a hangout, you need to
- have downloaded the Google hangout app to your computer. If you don’t have it yet, you will find it here: www.google.com/hangouts. Here is a help link for Google hangouts.
- Also download Google Chrome as your browser, you will find it here: www.google.com/chrome (help link for Google Chrome). Using other browsers may cause difficulties in joining the hangout that may look like technical problems but are solved by using Chrome. Rather than risk technical problems, use Google's own Chrome browser.
- To create a Google+ account go to this page: https://accounts.google.com/SignUp and follow the instructions.
- Adding me to one of your circles is not necessary in principle, but helps me enormously in processing the hangout invitations and the youtube videos, so thank you for doing this. Make sure you add the Grace Bubeck account with the same photo that’s also on the Living from Love website. I will then add you back to one of my circles. If you're not using your personal name, please let me know what your google+ name is! This sometimes takes a bit of time, so make sure you do this well ahead of time (day before would be best).
Before you join the hangout:
In order to minimize noise and echoing effects on the hangout and the youtube video, please follow 'netiquette':
- Wear headphones or a headset (you can use your cellphone headset on most computers);
- Make sure there is no background noise in the room;
- Mute your microphone when you're not speaking.
To optimize the image and sound quality on the hangout:
This is recommended, but not necessary if you have a fast computer and a good high speed connection.
- Make sure that your computer is connected by Ethernet cable, not WIFI.
- Close down all other windows that you may have open, or shut down and restart the computer, so that your browser is not slowed down by other windows or apps.
- Shut down whatever other programs may be running in the background (like a back-up program).
- Make sure you're the only one using your internet connection in the house (if possible).

Coming into the live hangout:
This is what the hangout screen will look like (but there will be more thumbnails at the bottom of the screen, depending on the number of people in the hangout):
You can mute and unmute your microphone by moving your cursor/mouse, which brings up the black toolbar at the top of the screen in the center. There is no need to mute your video (the image was created for hangouts on public events).
When you’re in a hangout, you can click on any of the thumbnails in order to see that person on your large screen: this will bring up a thick white line around her/his thumbnail. If you want to see another person, because this person is talking now, you click on her/his thumbnail. If you don't click on any of them, and there is no white line around any of them, the image will jump according to whose mic input is the loudest (usually the person who speaks).
When the hangout is over, make sure you 'hang up' by clicking on the red telephone receiver symbol on the top black toolbar.
Microphone problems: click on the little wheel symbol of the top tool bar to make sure that google recognizes your mic as the input for the hangout. This is usually automatic, but when we don't hear you, this is where you need to check. If you have to adjust the mic on the settings, you may need to leave the hangout (by 'hanging up') and then come on again (by clicking again on the link or the google+ invitation), so that google now knows the 'correct' mic as you enter the hangout.
